Irvine City Council
All American Asphalt: Despite thousands of resident petition signatures and requests, Mayor Farrah Khan and Councilmember Anthony Kuo did not agree to agendize public discussion of the All American Asphalt factory for more than a year. Kuo also worked to discourage UCI scientists from researching pollution from the facility, according to public records and Voice of OC.
100% renewable electricity: The Irvine City Council voted unanimously to make 100% renewable electricity the default for all Irvine electricity users on Feb. 8, 2022. (See item 3.1 - minutes and staff report)
OCPA Governance: As Irvine's representative on the OCPA board of directors, Khan voted to hire an OCPA CEO with no college degree or energy experience in Jan. 2021.
Climate Action Plan: The council voted unanimously to create a Climate Action Plan in June 2021, but failed to follow through with almost every task specified in the project timeline, putting the plan 16 months behind schedule as of Oct. 2022. Larry Agran requested monthly CAP updates twice during council discussion (see item 2.6 of June 22, 2021 meeting minutes, and Sept. 13, 2022 council discussion). See LA Times and Irvine Weekly coverage of these delays.
Building Electrification Policy: The council voted unanimously for building electrification policy on Dec. 14, 2021, but failed to deliver policy by Sept. 2022 as promised (see timeline on slide 12 of Irvine staff presentation). See also LA Times and Irvine Weekly coverage of these delays.
Eliminating CFCs: In 1989, then-mayor Larry Agran brought forward an item to eliminate CFCs, which became a model for other governments around the world. Bloomberg News: "Irvine, CA Showed Cities How to Save the Ozone"
